Steve Francis will hold a press conference Tuesday, November 24 at 3:15pm to discuss the growing need for food for those less fortunate.
Hundreds of families who face difficult economic times will have nutritious Thanksgiving dinners this year thanks to former Maryland and NBA star Steve Francis and Adventist Community Services. A growing number of families in Takoma Park, and nearby Montgomery County neighborhoods, are finding it increasingly difficult to find food assistance as the U.S. economy spirals into recession.
"For over a year, community requests for assistance at our food bank have increased steadily," said Ron Wylie, Executive Director of Adventist Community Services. "This partnership will help many or our most vulnerable neighbors have a truly Happy Thanksgiving."
Steve Francis, through The Steve Francis Foundation, is partnering with Adventist Community Services to help fill this need for Thanksgiving Dinners. ACS staff has registered over six hundred households to receive Thanksgiving food packages this year. Distribution at ACS will begin Monday morning at the Sligo Avenue site. Volunteers will distribute donated food packages to pre-registered low-income households. Steve Francis will personally appear to distribute packages Tuesday, November 24th at 3:00 PM.
Adventist Community Services' mission is to help the disadvantaged and grief stricken in our community by empowering individuals through compassionate interaction and sustainable services. Established in 1983, ACS offers a plethora of services ranging from emergency assistance, education, and workforce development with a solid case management component. ACS receives support from local Adventist churches, but heavily depends on other community members' donations. ACS is fortunate that many people provide the volunteer support necessary for successful programming.
The mission of The Steve Francis Foundation is to create and support recreational and educational opportunities for underprivileged youth. In addition to its annual Turkey Give-A- Way, the Foundation also hosts an annual Holiday Extravaganza for youth and the Summer Fiesta to raise funds for The Brenda Wilson Scholarship Program.Community Services to help fill this need for Thanksgiving Dinners.
