Soar to New Heights Celebration

The Steve Francis Foundation hosted its 11th Annual Scholarship Celebration on August 2nd, 2015 at TopGolf Houston. The theme of this year’s event was “Soar to New Heights” as we look to take the Foundation to new levels and encourage our scholars to keep dreaming and achieving.  It was an honor to celebrate our four Scholars who earned college degrees and to welcome seven new Scholars to the SFF family!

Four SFF Scholars Earn College Degrees

It is with great joy that The Steve Francis Foundation shares the news that four of its Scholars have earned college degrees this year.  In the words of Eleanor Roosevelt, “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams,” and these four SFF Scholars stayed committed to their dreams, despite many challenges that could have led them astray.  If their determination and strength is any indication of their future, we cannot wait to see what it holds for these four dreamers.

SFF Announces 2015 Scholarship Class

While former NBA All-Star Steve Francis no longer soars on the court, he has been busy helping youth soar to new heights. The Steve Francis Foundation Scholarship Program is proud to announce that it has awarded seven (7) college scholarships to Houston high school graduates this summer.  Each award is $10,000, which brings the total awarded by The Steve Francis Foundation since 2004 to sixty-three (63) awards and $630,000.  Twenty of the sixty-three recipients have earned college degrees and work for companies such as Attwater Detention Center, British Petroleum, Centerpoint Energy, Comcast, Douglass Media Group, Google – YouTube, Hewlett-Packard, NASA, and the WindAid Institute.

Scholar Spotlight: Stephanie Montalvan

2014 Scholar Stephanie Montalvan is wrapping up her freshman year at Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania, where she’s studying to be a Chemical Engineer. Never one to stay idle, the Houston native and KIPP Houston High School Graduate recently joined Bryn Mawr’s rowing team, and says it was one of her best college decisions thus far. Recently she sent us these pictures of the campus, and boy it sure looks chilly up there for a Texan! She also thanked us for the countless care packages writing, “They always come at just the right time and are always filled with the sweetest of love.”

2015 Scholarship Application Released

The Steve Francis Foundation Scholarship Program’s 2015 Applications have been released! The Scholarships are awarded to Houston high school seniors who have demonstrated leadership, integrity, community involvement, and academic commitment. Since 2004, $560,000 in scholarships funds have been awarded. Applicants must be affiliated with The Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Houston, Teach for America, KIPP…

SCHOLAR SPOTLIGHT: Angie DeWalt

Our 2012 Scholar Angie DeWalt is starting her junior year at the University of Houston. Angie plans to graduate in 2016 with a degree in chemistry and then continue to follow her dreams by becoming and Optometrist. During the 2014 summer break she worked at Best Buy as a Customer Service Specialist, but allowed time for a short vacation to Austin with her family, including fellow SFF Scholars and sisters Alexis and Warnessa. Together they went hiking, jet skiing, and tubing. By the time August came around she was eager to hit the books again!

Scholar Spotlight: Maria Perez

Maria Perez, one of our 2013 Scholars, was selected as The Steve Francis Foundation’s Most Likely to Pull All-Nighters. A KIPP Houston High School graduate, Maria just finished her first year studying Biology at Duke University and has aspirations to become a doctor specializing in pediatric arthritis. She is preparing to become a doctor now with her all-night study binges!

Scholar Spotlight: Erick Castillo

Erick Castillo graduated from KIPP Houston High School in 2013 and recently completed his first year of college at the University of Texas.  Erick’s love and passion for math & science is his driving factor to earn a degree in both mathematics and electrical engineering. “By delving into mathematics and the sciences, and learning the laws by which the universe runs, I am ensuring a future rich in happiness and purpose.”
