The DC Warriors is an Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Basketball Club from Steve’s childhood neighborhood of Takoma Park, Maryland coached by his lifelong mentor, Anthony Langley. Coach Langley was one of the original founders of the club 25 years ago.
Francis has been supporting the Warriors enthusiastically since 1999. Currently the DC Warriors club boasts three teams, divided by age with a 9 & Under team, 10 & Under team, and 17 & Under team. The teams consist of 10 to 12 youth from the DC, Virginia and Maryland area. Additionally, the Warriors are proud to have two highly talented foreign exchange students from Nigeria participating in the program. The teams practice for 90 minutes two to three times a week while school is in session, and up to three or four times a week during the summer and holiday breaks. While the Foundation provides much needed support for the teams, the kids and parents are also very active in their community with fundraising in the form of car washes, concession stands, and bake sales. This is something near and dear to Francis, who washed many cars and sold many candy bars himself as a young Warrior. He believes that each team member should participate in fundraising activities just as he did. The Warriors not only teach fundamentals and skill development, but are very successful in competition. The 17 & Under team won the Potomac Valley Regional Championships during the 2009, 2010, and 2011 seasons. In 2006, the 10 & Under team won the National AAU Championship. The 17 & Under team has started the 2013 season with two tournament victories in Virginia and Washington, DC. The 9 & Under team will travel to Ohio and Florida for 2013 season tournaments, while the 10 & Under team are North Carolina bound in July. The 17 & Under team will travel to Pittsburg, Florida, and New York this summer for their 2013 season competitions.
