After his first semester at The George Washington University, Gavin Sanchez gained admittance into the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. This prestigious program recognizes and honors the outstanding scholars in colleges and universities across the country. Gavin’s leadership and dedication to his education stood out immediately during our application process last year. He was awarded the Steve Francis Foundation Scholarship in 2013 in recognition of his work ethic and high standards of accountability.
At The George Washington University, Gavin is working on bachelor’s degree in Business Management while also enjoying the sightseeing in DC, volunteering, and working. Gavin dedicates a few hours every Saturday to tutor youth in the English language through Centro Nia. He finds it very rewarding to establish a relationship with children who are still developing academically, and assisting them in becoming better equipped for their future academic success. Gavin also works part time at the campus’ recreational facilities and was recognized as Employee of the Month in January.
“I was introduced to Gavin through Carrie Potter, a friend and fellow GW Grad, when she shared that he is working for Athletics and Recreation on campus. WOW! What an amazing young man. I could tell immediately after connecting with him that all the positive feedback from the GW Athletics and Recreation Staff was spot on. Affable, intelligent, hard working. I can sum up my impression of Gavin up in one sentence—Gavin has the “it” factor!”
–Jason Wilson, Associate Athletic Director of Facilities, Events & Operations
Gavin is currently in the process of acquiring an internship through INROADS, which places high performing minority students in opportunities to work for Fortune 500 Companies across the United States. He has his sights set on interning for Travelers Insurance Company in Houston this summer.
During his spare time, Gavin takes in the beauty that Washington DC has to offer. His favorite sight to visit is the Georgetown Waterfront to watch the sun set on a nice windy day.
The Sanchez family will head to the opposite end of the US and vacation in California for a few days during the summer to see Universal Studios and Hollywood. In past summer vacations, Gavin spent his time outdoors as he is a very experienced outdoorsman. He has paddled over 400 miles on Canadian lakes and survived in the wild more than 100 miles from Civilization over the course of his seven summer tenure as a camper at Camp Chippewa for Boys located in Minnesota. He is fortunate enough to have seen areas of the world that have been untouched for hundreds of years.
Gavin is a graduate from YES Prep Southeast and was ranked as one of the top students in his class with a 3.97 GPA. White at YES Prep, he served as the Varsity Captain for both the Cross County and Track teams, as a Student Ambassador, all while taking 5 AP classes his final semester of senior year. Gavin also played for the League City Minors Baseball Program.
