After recently celebrating his 20th birthday, Alex received a letter from Sportek Events to represent America in an International Basketball Tournament. Sportek Events is a long continuum of student athletes who have gone forward to become leaders in their sport and members of the community. Student athletes travel internationally to play the sport they love and learn a new perspective on the way they see themselves and the world. The program hopes the athletes will gain resilience, confidence, independence, and self-discipline. Alex has been designated to travel and play at one of the international destinations which could be the Bahamas, Costa Rica, Hawaii, or Las Vegas.
Alex began playing basketball in 6th grade and originally joined The Spring Branch Boys and Girls Club to play sports. In high school, he was named captain of the basketball team for two years in a row. Alex quickly became a regular to the club, which not only gave him the opportunity to play basketball but also taught Alex the importance of volunteering and mentoring. Through these experiences he learned the confidence to become a leader in school and his community.Alex and his family at the 2012 Scholarship Celebration.
